Why the name 'Architechs'?

Many people have conscientiously pointed out to us that we have spelt 'Architect' incorrectly in our logo.  There is however a very good reason for this and we have been using the name 'Architechs' for almost ten years.  At the time we decided upon a name, many of the software designers in the IT industry were starting to call themselves 'Architects'.  Checking with the Royal Institute of British Architects ( http://www.riba.org ) revealed that they were becoming increasingly upset about the use of the term 'Architect' when applied to anyone who was not involved in the design of buildings.  In fact it looked as though they were prepared to take legal action against anyone purporting to be an 'Architect' that did not meet the qualifications required by their professional body.  With due deference to the Royal Institute of British Architects we altered the spelling to avoid any problems.  It seems that there are quite a few organisations using the word Architechs in their name these days - we'd like to think of ourselves as the original.

Case Study:  Gallaher

Gallaher provide their staff with an almost unique annualised hours scheme, meaning they have to work a minimum number of hours spread over the whole year.  PAGE were asked to design software to plan and record staff working times.

At the time the European Working Time Directive had just been introduced and  software was needed that would track this and also forward plan and record staff working times.  They also have some fairly unique ways of calculating other aspects of hours planned and worked.  PAGE created an application for them based on Microsoft Access that allowed them to plan and modify shift patterns for each year.  This also allowed for 'groups', such as 'first aiders', to be planned ensuring cover was also available.  The software also provided for checking compliance with the working time directive on an individual basis - a unique feature for software at that time.  Gallaher began using the application in their personnel department (multi-user) in 1998 and have continued to use it without problems to this date.  One interesting underlying feature of this application that has allowed it to perform so well is that it was designed to function with disconnected data - a feature now boasted by ADO.NET.
